MoreDirect is MoreGreen
There’s a growing and widespread awareness of the magnitude of the environmental challenges that we face locally, regionally, nationally and globally. The threat of escalating energy costs, water restrictions, raw material shortages, polluted air and water, species extinction and global warming looms larger than ever. At MoreDirect, not only do green initiatives make good business sense, they are quite simply the right thing to do.
For 2008, MoreDirect’s green initiatives center on reducing energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and global warming and minimizing our environmental impact.
MoreGreen Office
As a member of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWise program, MoreDirect buys green and recycled office products wherever possible and has adopted a number of green operating procedures, including replacing disposable products such as paper plates, cups and silverware with washable, reusable products. We have implemented several energy-conserving operating procedures, including installing motion sensors in the bathrooms, offices and conference rooms to automatically turn off the lights when not occupied. All new equipment purchases are energy-efficient equipment and more of our users utilize more energy efficient laptops instead of desktop computers. We work with building management to use less hazardous cleaning products and put recycling boxes around the office to reduce landfill waste. We have installed low-flow faucets in the kitchen and bathrooms and eliminated incandescent lighting by installing more efficient fluorescent lighting.
MoreGreen Commuting
65% of all MoreDirect employees telecommute, which saves the environment 954,448 pounds of CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere per year.1 In addition, the remaining 35% of MoreDirect employees that do not telecommute benefit from the move of our corporate offices to less than a mile away from a light rail commuter line with direct shuttle bus service to the office. As of June 1st 2008 MoreDirect is offering employees incentives for using public transportation and carpooling to further reduce our carbon footprint.
1 CALCULATIONS ARE BASED ON RESEARCH USING A 2007 FORD TAURUS, THE PRAIRIE TREE PROJECT, AND ABC NEWS TECHNOLOGY/TRAFFIC SHOWING AN AVERAGE 16 MILE (X2) COMMUTE EQUALING 31.30 LBS OF CO2 (19.564 POUNDS OF CO2 PER GALLON X AVG. OF 20 MILES PER GALLON) RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE PER PERSON PER DAY X 126 EMPLOYEES IS 3944 LBS OF DAILY CO2 EMISSIONS X 242 WORKING DAYS IN THE YEAR = 954,448 POUNDS OF CO2.
MoreGreen Meetings
MoreDirect has been quick to embrace online meetings to bring people together while minimizing the environmental burdens imposed by such activities. Less than 5% of MoreDirect employees travel regularly to remote client locations, utilizing instead online web meeting services. MoreDirect has carried this initiative to our customers, utilizing Green events or online conventions to which customers can visit, explore virtual booths, sit in on virtual seminars and even participate, all without leaving their office or a carbon footprint.
MoreGreen Business Model
Invoicing : MoreDirect saves several trees a year with our aggressive promotion of electronic invoicing. According to information provided by the U.S. EPA and University of Virginia, it takes one pulpwood tree to make 11,500 sheets of typical office use, letter-sized, 20 lb. paper. In accounts payable, studies show that an invoice is typically photocopied 5 times from the time it is received in the mail until the time it is paid and filed.2 With a conservative average of 2 pages per invoice received, and assuming only 1 photocopy verses 5, the total is 4 pieces of paper used for every invoice received. MoreDirect is built for and promotes a paperless process, generating thousands of electronic invoices a month X 4 pieces equaling several thousand pages not printed, or saving many trees a year!
Shipping : MoreDirect’s unique shipping model minimizes the time a carrier/truck is traveling on the road, substantially reducing the resulting emissions. Our ordering system and business model gives our customers access to over 33 unique shipping locations with the majority of product being delivered out of our 22 distribution locations. MoreDirect’s proprietary system, called TRAXX, automatically selects the closest warehouse to the ship-to location. As a result, MoreDirect as an average travels 905 miles less than other competitors, based on the comparisons made using random cities across the United States. MoreDirect has built a tool that compares MoreDirect’s efficiency model against selected IT supplier options when delivering to specific client locations around the country. This is available for your use through your MoreDirect representative.
Recycle Tomorrow Program : Through MoreDirect’s suppliers we can offer IT asset disposal service throughout the United States. In addition to ensuring end users that the removal of all sensitive data from hard drives and other storage media is in accordance with data protection and privacy regulations mandated under the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and HIPAA, the hardware is recycled, sold or disposed of in accordance with strict environmental regulations.
